No Frills - Atom Boys

A week after finishing as finalists in the Mount Forest Tournament, the New Hamburg Heat No Frills Atom Boys traveled to Fisherville for the Ontario Rural Softball Association “A” division championship tournament on July 22-23.   In their first game against Jarvis, the Heat got their bats rolling early. Travis Hackbart led the offense with a homerun and triple, Dean Mohr added a triple and double, and Isaac Roth contributed 3 hits in a 21-3 trouncing.  Roth, Noah Lichti and Jaxon Hergott each took a turn in the pitchers circle, combining for 12 strikeouts in the win.
In their second game the Heat faced St. George. Wilson Butcher had two hits, including a triple, while Joey Durrer added a homerun.  However the Heat struggled in the field and fell by a score of 9-7.  This sent New Hamburg into the loser bracket of the double knockout tournament, forcing them to win three straight games on Sunday in order claim the championship.
The next game for the Heat was against Caledonia. Lichti got the start on the mound and mesmerized the opposing hitters, striking out 8 batters over 4 innings of work.  Hackbart smacked a homerun, while Hergott pitched the final inning and had 2 hits including a double in the 16-3 victory.
This win set up a rematch with St. George, with the Heat needing to beat them twice in a row to claim the championship.  This game was a slugfest. Roth got the start on the mound and struck out 10 batters in his 5 innings of work. Lichti added a couple of strikeouts over two innings. Nate Roth had 2 hits including a triple, while Teegan Vleeming and Lucas Bolding each had clutch RBI hits.  The 17-12 victory set up a final winner take all game. Roth again took to the mound, pitching a complete game and striking out 13 batters.  The Heat took the lead midway through the game, but 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning by St. George tied the game heading into the final inning.  After the first two Heat batters of the inning grounded out, the Heat bats came alive.  Four straight hits by Isaac Roth, Butcher, Nate Roth and Mohr cashed in 3 runs.  A fired up Heat team quickly shut down their opponents in the bottom of the inning, capped off with a diving catch by Logan Lecours, in an 8-5 victory.
Congratulations to all the players for a great effort in capturing New Hamburg’s fourth ever ORSA Atom Boys Championship.
